What is a Paid Diary Study?
A diary study is a research activity that takes place over a period of time, allowing you to share your experiences, thoughts, and behaviors as they happen in your daily life. Instead of participating in a single activity or session, you’ll complete short activities or entries over several days or weeks.
Unlike focus groups or one-on-one interviews, diary studies capture feedback over time, providing deeper insight into how experiences evolve rather than just a single moment. In some cases, participants may also be invited to take part in a follow-up one-on-one interview for additional feedback and compensation.
Diary studies are commonly used to explore:
- How people use products, services, or technology in everyday life
- Shopping habits and decision-making processes
- Reactions to new products or concepts over time
- Daily routines, media use, or family activities
Diary studies typically last anywhere from a few days to a few weeks, depending on the project.
What to Expect
If you’re selected for a diary study, here’s what the experience usually looks like:
- A study period that lasts several days or weeks
- Short daily or scheduled activities completed on your own time
- Clear instructions provided in advance
- Prompts that may include written responses, photos, videos, or short surveys
- Occasional reminders to help you stay on track
Most diary studies are completed online through a secure platform that you can access from your computer or smartphone.
Incentives for Diary Studies
Participants who complete a diary study typically earn $25–$100+ per project as a thank-you for their time and thoughtful participation.
Incentives vary by study and are typically based on:
- Length of the study period
- Number of required activities
- Level of detail involved
After successfully completing all required activities, you’ll receive a reward link that can be redeemed for an eGift card
