What is a Paid In-home Study?
A paid in-home study is a research activity where trained research professionals visit participants in their homes to learn about their real-life experiences, routines, and product usage.
Instead of participating in a facility or online session, you take part in a guided conversation in your natural environment. Researchers may observe how you use products, devices, or services you already own and ask questions about your daily habits and decision-making.
In-home studies help organizations better understand how products and services fit into everyday life.
In-home studies are commonly used to explore:
- How products or devices are used in real-world settings
- Household routines and behaviors
- Shopping and decision-making processes
- Experiences with brands, media, or services
- Environmental or contextual factors that influence usage
Visits typically last between 60 and 120 minutes, depending on the project.
What to Expect
If you’re selected for a paid in-home study, here’s what the experience usually looks like:
- A scheduled visit at a date and time that works for you
- One or more trained research professionals visiting your home
- A friendly, guided conversation about your experiences and routines
- Observation of how you naturally use products, devices, or services you already have
- Opportunities to demonstrate tasks or walk through typical activities
- Clear instructions provided in advance so you know what will be discussed
In-home visits are designed to feel comfortable and conversational. Researchers are there to learn, not to judge, and will focus only on areas relevant to the study.
All timing, expectations, and details are shared beforehand so you can feel fully prepared.
Incentives for In-home Studies
Participants who complete an in-home study typically earn $100–$250+ per project as a thank-you for welcoming researchers into their home and sharing their time and insights.
Incentives vary by study and are typically based on:
- Length of the visit
- Topic and level of involvement
- Household participation (if multiple members are included)
After completing the in-home visit, you’ll receive a reward link that can be redeemed for an eGift card.

Who Can Participate in a Paid In-home Study?
In-home studies may include:
- Adults of all ages
- Parents and caregivers
- Families with children (with parental consent when required)
Each study has specific requirements, so not every Panelpolls member will qualify for every in-home opportunity.
Why Participate in a Paid In-home Study?
Many participants enjoy in-home studies because they offer:
- A comfortable setting in your own home
- The opportunity to share real-life routines and experiences
- A more natural conversation compared to a formal facility setting
- The chance to influence products and services in a meaningful way
In-home studies allow researchers to see the full context of how products and services are used and your perspective helps shape future improvements.
